Eye Exam For Contacts
Trying to decide between contacts and glasses? Or maybe a set of both? If you are considering contact lenses, you will need to let your eye doctor know so an additional eye exam for contacts can be included with your comprehensive eye exam.
Additional testing will include evaluating your vision with contacts. A test will be conducted to measure the surface of the eye to determine what size and type of contacts are best suited for you. A film tear evaluation may also be included to be sure you have enough tear production and no dry eye issues to safely and comfortably wear contacts or to prescribe contacts that are specific to the needs of dry eye conditions.
Eyeglass prescriptions and contact lens prescriptions differ. Prescriptions for eyeglasses measure a position of approximately 12 millimeters from the eyes whereas prescriptions for contact lens sit directly on the surface of the eye and measurements are based on the diameter. Proper fitting and accuracy of the prescription is important for the health of your eyes.
Most comprehensive eye exams check for your ability to see at different distances, how well your eyes work together, how your pupils respond to light, and various tests to determine the health of your eye, beginning with dilation of the pupils. These assessments check for eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Contact lens exams take the comprehensive exam a bit further by focusing on the cornea, the clear covering of the eye on which the contact will rest. Your doctor will determine the proper curve and size lenses you will need as well as check for any unusual characteristics in shape or possible scratches on your eye’s surface. Certain eye conditions such as astigmatism may require specialized contact lenses, called toric lenses, known for providing sharper vision for those with distorted or blurred vision.
After the eye exam for contacts, you will be likely be given samples of different brands to try to find what fits your needs best. Then your doctor can offer a prescription and get you on your way to clear vision.
